Two Pianos. Same Model. Generations Apart.

We had the privilege of sampling two pianos of identical models (Steinway Model L), both built in the same factory, but 65 years apart. The difference in sound between these two pianos was not subtle. Each has its own character and quirks. The New York L 1926 is growly with pronounced overtones. The New York L 1991 is clean and bright with a smooth sound.

How much of this difference is because of the age difference? There’s almost no way to know. Pianos are complex instruments with hundreds of moving parts that can all be adjusted. So even with the same soundboard size, you can get an amazing amount of variety from these two pianos.
